What Contractors Should Provide to You.....

• A written contract or work order stating the total cost, including parts and materials and any charge for an estimate
• The contract should state the business and address of the person engaged in the business of home remodeling. If a post office box, mail service or agent is used to receive correspondence,the contract should also state the home address of the person engaged in the home remodeling business.
• The contract should include a description of the work, total cost, schedule and method of payment, including down-payment, subsequent payments and final payments, and a provision for termination by either party.
• The company should provide customers with a copy of "Home Repair:Know Your Consumer Rights" pamphlet prior to execution of any contract. A brochure must be provided but no written acknowledgement is required for contracts under $1,000.

Do's and Dont's You Should Know

• Get all estimates in writing.
• Do not be induced to sign by high-pressure tactics.
• Never sign a contract with blank spaces. If a loan is involved, do not sign the contract before your lender approves the loan.
• Consumers have three business days from the time the contract is signed to cancel, if the sale is made at your home. The contractor cannot deprive you of this right by initiating work or other tactics.
• Determine whether contractor will guarantee products and has proper insurance.
• Request lien waivers from the general contractor to protect your property. Suppliers and subcontractors have a right to file a lien against your property if the general contractor fails to pay them.
